The Resurrection of Jesus Christ…Cornerstone of the Christian Faith

resurrectionThe Resurrection of Jesus Christ is the Cornerstone of the Christian Faith.

As the Apostle Paul stated, “If Christ has not been raised, your faith is worthless; you are still in your sins” (1 Corinthians 15:17). Christianity is NOT blind faith!  Dr. Greenleaf, the Royal Professor of Law at Harvard University, was one of the greatest legal minds that ever lived. He wrote the famous legal volume entitled, A Treatise on the Law of Evidence, considered by many the greatest legal volume ever written. Dr. Simon Greenleaf believed the Resurrection of Jesus Christ was a hoax. And he determined, once and for all, to expose the “myth” of the Resurrection. After thoroughly examining the evidence for the resurrection — Dr. Greenleaf came to the exact opposite conclusion! He wrote a book entitled, An Examination of the Testimony of the Four Evangelists by the Rules of Evidence Administered in the Courts of Justice. In which he emphatically stated:

“it was impossible that the apostles could have persisted in affirming the truths they had narrated, had not JESUS CHRIST ACTUALLY RISEN FROM THE DEAD, . . .”

(Simon Greenleaf, An Examination of the Testimony of the Four Evangelists by the Rules of Evidence Administered in the Courts of Justice, p.29).

Have you considered the evidence for the death and resurrection of Jesus? Here are a few points to consider:

Evidence Jesus Died

1. Nature of his wounds (whipping, crucifixion and spear in side) ensured death (Mark 15:25, 33; John 19:34).
2. His mother, friends and closest disciple witnessed his death (Luke 23:47–49).
3. Romans, who were professional executioners, pronounced him dead (John 19:33).
4. Pilate double-checked to make sure Jesus was dead (Mark 15:44–45).
5. The Jews never denied the account of Jesus being buried in the tomb of Joseph of Arimathea, a member of the Sanhedrin (Matt. 27:60; John 19:39–40).
6. Non-Christian writers from the first and second centuries recorded the death of Jesus (e.g. Josephus, Tacitus, Thallus, Lucian, Phelgon, The Jewish Talmud.)

7. In light of the historical evidence, modern medical authorities have verified his death.

JAMA March 21,1986, p. 1463 (Journal of the American Medical Association)

“Clearly, the weight of historical and medical evidence indicates that Jesus was dead before the wound to his side was inflicted and supports the traditional view that the spear, thrust between his right rib, probably perforated not only the right lung but also the pericardium and heart and thereby ensured his death. Accordingly, interpretations based on the assumption that Jesus did not die on the cross appear to be at odds with modern medical knowledge.”

Evidence Jesus Rose for the Dead

1. The tomb was empty with grave clothes in it
2. Over 500 witnesses saw Him 12 times
3. They touched His physical body
4. They saw His crucifixion scars
5. They ate with Him four times
6. He taught them for 40 days
7. He did miracles for them
8. He transformed His followers from cowards to martyrs overnight!

The fearful disciples became bold, fearless witnesses of the resurrected Jesus Christ. After seeing the ultimate proof of Jesus’ deity, thousands of Jews abandoned their centuries old religious practices and became followers of Jesus Christ.  They realized that He was, indeed, the Messiah!  They were convinced that Jesus had the power over life and death! This is still true today.  The same Jesus is still alive!  He still has the power over life and death.  He is still able…and willing to transform lives today.  All who will repent and trust in Him will “know Him and the power of His resurrection” as Paul testified in Philippians 3:10.

JESUS IS ALIVE!  Will you cry out to Jesus today?

that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved; for with the heart a person believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation.    Romans 10:9-10 (New American Standard Bible)
